This is what I whant to achive, how to do it ? :) And WHERE do I do it :)
Move my shiftpoints higer at WOT. Now it shift first to second at 5200, second to third 4300rpm, its second to third i whant to move upp..
Make my tranny last longer, mayby add a tranny cooler? Some tips here would be nice.
And I would like to make it shift a bit "harder", now its really soft...
And last, how much can my auto tranny take ( HP ). Before it will wear down. I run it at the tracks atleast once a month..
First, as far as ive seen and been told a healthy stock 700r4 trans is good to 400 engine H.P. As far as raising the shift points , I dont think a shift kit will give you any real increase in rpm just in firmness. Adjustng the throttle cable only seems to affect the downshift. You would have to modify the trans internally to raise the shift points to that level but is that where your car is still making power? How can you determine it will improve a quarter mile time. You cant hold it in 2nd with the shifter unless you change to a manual valve body the stock tranny will shift itself no matter where the stick is but a manual valve body would let you pick the shift pts. Then you could find the ideal power curve.
The proper way to adjust the WOT shift points are with the governor.
You need to purchase a B&M governor kit. Next is where the real work begins, you need to try different weights and springs to achieve your desired WOT shift points.
gee. sounds hard.. Im going to make my l98 breath better, so I think i will gain 1/4 time if i adjust my second to third shiftpoints. Is this a major thing to do? Must I drop the tranny?
You can get the B&M govenor kit at Jegs, it's around $27 it comes with 6 weights and 6 springs. Basically you use the weights to get in the rpm range that you want. Then you use the springs to fine tune. However, they both affect each other. It usually takes several attempts to get close to what you want, then it is just how determined you are to get it perfect. You have to use a combo of heavy weight/light spring to light weight/heavy spring or vice versa. The best thing to do is write down your weight and spring combo with your 1-2 and 2-3 shift so you can track what changes affect your shift. The lighter the weight and the lighter the spring = higher shift.
I just installed my trans over christmas and have made a couple change every week to get mine where they are now. I started with a 4300 1-2 and 4000 2-3 now I think I am content at 6300 1-2 and 6300 2-3. There are good and bad with this much of a change (more good than bad). The good, down shifts are great just leave it in OD, anytime you go full throttle it is in a good power band (In OD on the freeway @ 70 mph it will downshift to 2nd gear). You dont have to worry about shifting while at the drag strip and it is more consistent. With my 3.07 gear 2-3 shift is at 97mph. The bad, these changes also affect when it goes into OD, right now mine doesnt go into OD at part throttle until 60 mph. To correct this, you have to go into the valvebody to the 3-4 spring, I havent found it annoying enough to do this yet!(this isnt a problem until you raise the shift points to as high as I have)
Sorry for the long reply but, believe me a better explantion will take a lot longer.
