How do I lower the rear end? Buy a kit??? Some have said I just need longer bolts? If so....how long? Wanting to do this before I align!
Thanks in advance!
Oh yeah...if you have any alignent settings with the lower rear end.....please fill me in on that also! Trying to get ready for the next AutoX season!
I just lowered mine yesterday. I ordered the replacement bolts from Eckler's. For 84-96, Part Number#22663, 10" long bolts. It was very easy to do. Just jack up one back tire at a time. Remove the wheel and lower the fiberglass spring down onto something that will support it and relieve the tension on it. Then you can just remove the old bolt and insert the new one. You can adjust the ride height after you replace both of the bolts. I think it lowered the back end about 1.5 inch. The car is now perfectly parallel with the ground and looks much meaner. I havn't driven it yet because of the snow here, so I don't know if it has improved the handling. I don't know about the alignment settings. I'd say it was definately worth the $20.
Thanks man...............the only thing I was wondering was how you know that both sides are the same height, since that part says you can lower it up to a MAX of 3.5" ! I think thats the way I will go! Do they come with good instructions?
Lowering just the rear can effect high speed stability as the car is suppose to have some rake to it. Of course, at what speed this effects is prolly higher then most of us drive normally.
I lowered the whole car and was very impressed with the results. Looks better, handles better and even rides better. I did leave a rake front to rear thou.
Those bolts will not lower it up to 3.5 inch, only about 1.5, but you don't really need to go any lower than that. The new bolts are slightly larger in diameter also, but they fit fine. They didn't have any instructions. If you have any more questions about how to do it just ask. Oh yeah, you can check to see if its even by using a measuring tape to measure the distance from the body to the ground, under the car right behing the front wheels and right in front of the back wheels.
Do get the car aligned again, because you likely changed the static toe angle. You can eyeball the ride height you think you like on one side, but for accurate measurements, you need to have the car on a *level* surface and measure from the ground to the pinch welds, not the fender lips. C4's are known for not being square and symmetrical. You may not like what it looks like after leveling it out using the pinchweld method if you're real ****, and your car's bodywork happens not to be even.
BTW, just go to Lowe's and get some 10" grade 8 bolts and locknuts for about $4.
I like the rake but I don't like how everyone behind you can see all the way to the cats. I think my '87 has this problem worse than my '94 for some reason. Hmmm...
HEY MAN..........dont let my secret out!!!!
I wish I had won it!!!! I was in Indiana last year about this time getting ready for another surgery.....also the same time that they were revealing the canidates for the Heisman!!! Had some of the hospital employee's thoroughly convinced and that my illness was under wraps......
It was great.......I needed to have some fun, buy my parents only let me go so far!!
Thanks for the Home Depot method.........I could do that tonight actually!!
I removed all of the paint and wet sanded them down to 2000 grit. Then I polished them with some Blue Magic. They are made of Mg I think so they need to be clear coated or they will oxidize (white coating).

:yesnod: - they are magnesium. Be careful what type of clearcoat you use also as I have heard of some people painting their polished covers only to have the paint react...
Jim,
the bolts are 9/16 inches in diameter, by 10 inches long. I picked the bolts at a local supply warehouse. I went with a grade 8 bolt on my car. If I am not mistaken the bolts you get from the mail order catalogs are grade 5. They were pretty proud of the things though at 18$ each.
Hey... DRAGRACR... I been waitin' to see if you were gonna post or lurk. Welcome. Glad to see a local show up. I was beginning to think I was the only one around here. I don't spend much time in here... Mostly over with the Sharks in the C3 forum.
