Default burn off module for MAF

On my 85 should I be able to see the burn off module underneath the passenger side dash after I removed the ecm? There is a plug that is a two wire red/white plug that is not plugged in and I cant see the burn off module. I got this new MAF and it does the same thing as my other MAf,. The car runs better without the MAF pplugged in. I am wondering what that Red and White plug goes to ???????

The module looks like a small ECM about the size of two packs of cigs stacked on top of each other. Its behind the "breadbox" above the ECM. If you take the dash cap off you should be able to look down behind it and its screwed into the supports. If the car runs better without the MAF then its more likely to the MAF sensor than the burnoff module. Have you tried using a known good sensor in place of yours to see if it fixes the problem? Trust me its a lot easier than tearing the dash apart.

buddy I don't know what your connector goes to but your Burn Off Module is a 6 wire device. white, black, blue, green, yellow and red.

If you have the fsm, you would be much better off doing the test as described. The bom does not glow very much at all and can be quite hard to see. When my bom was bad it threw no codes, I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to throw parts at it, do some diagnostics first. If you don't have the fsm then let me know and I will send you the instructions on how to check the bom.

You need to test for voltage at the connector next. The Red wire should read 12v while the car is running and the dark blue one will read +3v after shutdown when its burning off. If this doesnt happen then follow the wiring, looking for any breaks.

The module is a pretty stout piece. However if you've ruled out everything else I would remove it from the car and take it to an electrician who knows how to work on circuit boards. I did this with mine and it turned out to be a few broken solder joints. Replacing the unit is going to cost a LOT if you can even find one, so if you have to replace it I would recommend getting a later ECM and repinning to work with your wiring harness, this will allow you to use two relays in place of the burnoff module.

As of July '05 NAPA has/had the MAF burnoff module (that's when I bought one). I have a "spare', If you simply cannot find one anyplace - the problem was NOT the module... BTW it cost me $250 or so in 2005..

Frankly I doubt that the module is Ever the problem (there are rare cases where it's been Proven to be bad, Very Rare cases..). The MAF itself or the wiring harness/connectors are far more likely to be faulty that the module is.

The module lives behind the breadbox above the ECM. You cannot see it from below, not even after pulling the ECM out.

Here's a guess for your red/white plug - the courtesy light in the footwell. That plug dangles right there in the way when messing with the ECM. Check it for voltage/ground with the dome lights on/off and see..
