Any Auto Zone or Advance Auto or Napa or other parts store should sell a 12V test light for under $10. It's a handy tool to have around because the test probe is thin and sharp enough to push through the insulator and hit the conductor without stripping it back. It's simple to use too, clip the long wire to ground and test away. I definately prefer it over a DVM for finding 12 volts in cars.

you want to use a relay, i took the power for the fan from the battery and grounded at the frame. i ran my relay off of the fan relay since it is hot when the switch is on. you will also need to upgrade your fan fuse from 7.5 amps to 10 or maybe from 5 to 10. all grounds go the frame at the horn on my car pretty simple really. The wire you are looking for at the fan realy is pink and on the drivers side of the radiator

I used the little red box next to the battery for the relay's power.

Use the fan relay for the SIGNAL
use that signal to trigger a RELAY
use the relay to get power from the CIRCUIT BUS
the circuit bus has a tie in to the BATTERY
