Default Carb and Stock Dizzy

I am not trying to start the great debate again but was wondering, If you install a carb on the L98 Tpi engine why cant you still run the computer dizzy and let it still control the timing?

The computer uses inputs from the EFI sensors to determine advance based upon the programming. When you switch to a carb you take those out of the system.

Simple like that

You can.

On a MAP car it's a little easier. leave the MAP sensor in place.

On a MAF car, I almost feel it wouldn't be worth trying to rig a MAF just to calculate load.

You don't need TPS. A CTS and IAT wouldn't be a bad idea.

The '870 ECM that is in your 1985 however is a turd. You would be better off buying a timing computer from ACCEL or MSD, or repinning it to a later ECM.. Both of which seem more involved than just running an older dizzy with weights and vac advance.

On carb applications I've used '746/'747 computers (tbi trucks and fbody) to run timing curves. Very simple harness, you can zero out most of the stuff you don't need but sometimes it's nice being able to change timing without having to get out a screwdriver. And considering I have a big box of harnesses, and another box of ECM's it's always been free. I usually try to convince people to stick with EFI, especially on trucks since they need to start if it's 5 degrees out of 95 degrees out.

Joe

Thank you for a complete answer it was more of thinking out loud and wanting to know for my own knowledge. I further agree that running the 85 computer and a most likely worn dizzy doesn't make sence. I had never seen any discussion on this and was just wondering.
