Default '86 DN 4+3 Dextron III or IV?

Anyone using Dextron IV in their overdrive units?
Chevron states it's back servicable with Dextron II & III.

I don't use synthetic engine oil for fear of seepage and would like to know if this could create any problems.

Do you mean Dexron 6 (VI)? I don't believe there is any dexron 4. 6 is a synthetic fluid, but is supposed to be a suitable replacement for Dexron III. It's supposed to last much longer. It's also more than double the price of Dex III stuff.

If you are concerned, why not stick with what the car calls for? There's nothing wrong with Dex III, and you can still buy it.

Guess I wasn't paying attention. IV seemed like the natural progression of the stuff. If it just lasts longer I might as well go with III since I would still like to change out the filter every 10,000 miles-thanks

Yes, they called it 6 because it lasts twice as long as Dexron 3. Or at least that's the line I've heard.

Go with the Dextron III. Stay away from synthetic in the 4+3. Also a great way to make sure that it doesn't leak after you change fluid and filter is to use a sealer called "The Right Stuff". You can get it at any good auto part store. I changed mine last summer and it never leaked one drop.

Napa was out of stock. They said it was listed as a filter & gasket kit. Is there a reason you did not use a gasket since they are available?

No. Actually I heard of this being done from someone on this forum. I had the gasket that came with the filter. I did not use it as a few guys here recommended not using it. My mechanic did not want to use the supplied gasket either. All he did was to put the adhesive on the clean pan, and install the pan with the correct torque settings on the bolts. It worked like a charm. Highly recommend.

that stuff works much better than a gasket. I used it on my thermostat housing when I kept getting leaks.

I'll look for the right stuff when I pick up the filter
Thanks

Hey, One more thing. You will have to use the rubber "O" ring off the old filter. Be sure not to destroy it when you remove the old filter. I searched high and low but could not find a replacement made for this. It should probably still be in good enough condition to re-use as mine was.

If you buy a filter kit from ecklers it comes with the o-ring. They are 19.95 but my o-ring
was hard and brittle so I ordered one from them.

i went to change my fluid and filter but my grommet was not in good condition. Upon searching the forum i found a replacement grommet, but i had to buy a package of them. So far, i have been unable to get the grommet to stay on the filter when i install everything. I am currently trying to stretch the grommet and will try again tomorrow, but if it works, i can mail out the extra grommets to members once i get it to work properly.
thanks
matt

well i had to stretch the grommet slighty overnight to get it to work.
But it worked like charm, and i have the pan put back on with proper amount of dextron it.
Now i have a few of the grommets leftover, if anyone needs one, let me know.
thanks
matt
