my brother is thinking of either getting the LPE full length headers or
the SLP intake runners. which one would you guys suggest he goes with first ?
the engine is no longer the l98, replaced w/ gm crate HO 300Hp. updated to
1.6 roller rockers and 52mm TB & 3.73s. (flowmaster exhaust system) the car runs great since these latest upgrades and still passes smog w/ no problem.
Re: full length headers or SLP runners question (qkvette)
If he installs 1 3/4" Supercomp headers on that motor, presuming stock intake cam etc. it's gonna feel like a real slug. He might pick up a few rpms, but with a stock intake etc. it's still not going to rev enough to make a difference. Large runners on a stock base is waste of money. Especially the SLP's. If anything, by the Accell base, and large tube runners (either ASM or the Accell's) . Port the plenum and then he will notice a meaningfull difference in power. Later, he could add the headers. Both will give him another 200 RPM's or so. i.e. more horespower.

I tried the SLP runners in stock form on a stock engine and it didnt have the stomp the stock runners had.Its runner openings are stock size and even smaller when gasket matching.
To take full advantage of SLP runners, its suggested to port the heck out of them to large tube size and knock the divider wall down more so.
Theyre really big runners on the outside in cast form and hard to install.Re routing of vacuum hose and wire harness is needed along the valve covers.
They can be made to perform but alot of porting is needed.A few shops I spoke to wanted about 350 bucks to fully port these out.Doing it yourself at home will take many hours with a die grinder and misc carbide bits and cutters.
I would get a good exhaust first and get ASM runners or something later.Or vice versa if you plan to install those mods anyway within a short time span.
:)

The Accell base is used in the SR, and is proven. (that's what I use with their runners) This topic has been brought up on The Forum a zillion times since it started about what, three years ago? If the Forum had the ability to organize the archives from the begining, I can't imagine that you would have found three guys that gave the SLP runners high marks. The ASM and Accell long tubes on the other hand are always at the top of the list. The Edlebrock base and runners are almost as forgotten as the SLP's.

Porting the plenum would be best, and it's easy to DIY. Read the TPIS "Insiders" book, and that's all you need to understand it before you do it. If you were in the "hood", I'd show you how to do it.
