Hi everybody, have been reading a lot of past threads on ATF fluid and there seems to be alot of controversy over synthetic and non syn. I have an 85 vette with the transmission out due to failed torque convertor clutch. Im having the shop do a bench top inspection to see if the tranny needs any work. In the mean time i am trying to figure out what ATF fluid to put back in it. fyi, its a 700R4. I will probably track it a few times but not much, primarily daily driving and that sort of stuff. I want to get the most life out of the tranny that i can bc i dont want to have to pull it out again. I hear a lot of good things about the Mobil 1and Redline ATF? What experiences have you had?
If you want the maximum life out of a 700r4, put a tranny cooler on the car. That would save you more time and expense than any particular fluid change.
Thanks guys, i also read one of Pete K posts stating that he has had bad experiences with synthetic ATF, sounds like he is a a very experienced and respected member of the forum. Good advice is hard to come by sometimes but the members of this forum seem to come through everytime! Majority rules, i think ill be sticking with a good non syn ATF.
Dont 85 vettes come with a trans cooler? when i pulled my tranny i had to disconnect some lines that were routed to the cooling pack up front. If they are not to a cooler, does anybody know where they go?
Those lines go to the standard cooler in the radiator which all automatic cars have. Vader86 was referring to an aftermarket cooler which cannot hurt a thing but I feel that unless you are going to do real hard driving it is unneeded. JMO If you feel you are going to drive the car real hard then by all means an aftermarket cooler would be a very good idea.

There is a small cooler from the factory on the side of the radiator, but I am referring to a larger aftermarket model that actually does something useful.
I believe a better one should always be installed.
Thanks for the suggestions. Ill deffinatly look into the aftermarket coolers now, i just found out from my mechanic that i need a rebuild, originally i thought it was just the torque converter! Need to make sure all these upgrades are going to last...Any suggestions for aftermarket parts, he said he was goin to strengthen the 700R4's weak points but im not really sure what parts exactly he is referring to, any references?
