Default gear swap in 1992 lt1 automatic

i have a virtually stock 92 auto with the standard gears. i understand changing gears out to 3.07 is a great way to get some seat of the pants acceleration. i wish to do this modification this spring. i have searched high and low and i am looking for a definitive answer on exactly what i need for this including all parts, gaskets, oil, etc. Is there a specific website that has a package deal with all parts needed? what is a good price? I have searched high and low on here and got some good info but there seems to be conflicting information, alot of dead links to websites with pics, tutorials, and sale prices, etc. If someone could point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!!

Are you doing swap yourself or getting a shop to do it?

i would be having a shop do it. What i am looking for ultimately is information on what the right parts are that i need to purchase and present to the shop so that they know what to do and the job gets done correctly and completely.

Well, I thought Toms used to d36. Maybe they still do if you ask. http://tomsdifferentials.com/catalog.asp?pg=31 Some offroad shops are good at setting up Danas.

You'll need the gears, $400.00 and an install kit $125.00 you can buy both from www.summitracing.com Now would be a good time to do the u-joints too.

You'll need to change the speedo gears in your tranny.

Also, you might want to consider a lower gearset, maybe a 3.54.

Your first "chore" needs to be determining what axle ratio you're driving "now". Depending on build you could be at 2.59 (GM1), 2.73 (GU2) or even 3.07 (G44) with the AT Trans. You might find (G92) which would be "Performance Axle Ratio". '92 with an AT I believe that would be 3.07. You'll find this information on the console lid door in Alpha Numeric sequence. If you're at 2.59 there will be SOP with the 3.07, if you're at 2.73 you'll not have near the SOP at 3.07.

That's the "first move"!

These links take the OP to all "the wrong stuff"!! He's a '92 AT/D36 and your links all go to D44 material. There's how "wrong buys start"!!

The D36 I believe will go in sequence to only these available ratios and they're generally quite expensive. 2.73, 3.07 then to a 3.54 and finally to a 3.73/3.75. I don't believe I've ever seen a 3.3x for a D36. I'll check some quality sources but it's the "spread" I'm fairly confident with. It's a shame to because a 3.2x/3.3x would be very driveable.

I know for a fact i am at 2.59 as-is. I see that summit doesnt even offer 3.07...only 3.54. what is the best source for 3.07 ring and pinion?

Ideally if it were me I'd try to find a "factory build" 3.07. Then it's quite simply a "bolt-in" and you're likely going to be much happier with it than the build with aftermarket gears. There are though some things to watch out for. You would want preferably a "low mile" unit and one that hasn't sat out in the weather or been in storage for an extended period.

They come around "not so frequently" but I'd post in the "wanted to buy" and then find one local enough to you to avoid shipping. Price will depend on what you find.

Here's your speedo fix: You need a new speed sensor # 10456092 (that's discontinued but I could likely come up with) and a driven gear # 25513049 (that's inexpensive and available)! People remark that they change the mount of the "speed sensor" 180 degrees to compensate for the pitch but I've always tried to do it with the right parts. You don't need to go into the trans to do your change but I might consider doing the extension seal and if your car is a "high miler" maybe the extension bushing while your into the project.
