Had a ujoint on the driverside go out, replaced those and then it went out again 6 mths later and it thumped when shifting from 1-2 and 2-3. Replaced all ujoints and it still does it and now it does it just putting it into gear.
I used loctite to put the bolts back in, so I know there tight(also tried retightening them), could when the ujoints first went out they have messed up my halfshaft? Though the ujoints look like they fit snug
I don't think it is my gears, because the passenger side looks perfect and I only hear the sound coming from the drivers side.
PS: also have a 2300 converter in the car, but it was put in about 6 months before the 1st ujoint failer and I only used HD ujoints.
Thanks in advance!!
Also, what size allen do I need to check the fluid in the differential?
Did the noise go away after you replaced the u-joints the first time and then return later on or did the u-joints make no difference at all?
3/8" for the fill plug, while you are under there check to make sure the C beam bolts are tight.
Put the car up on jackstands or a lift and rotate each tire back and forth and see if there is play coming from any of the ujoints in the halfshafts or the driveshafts. Also, do check the torque of the 4 c-beam bolts. You should be able so see where the lash or play is coming from.
Two 18mm head bolts on the tailshaft and two 21mm head bolts on the front of the differential all of which go through the bottom and top of the cbeam. You will need an open end wrench to hold the nut above the cbeam while torquing from below.
Alright, I found my problem. The drivers side turns about a 1/4" farther than it should, meaning that when it stops going forward or backward it stops under light pressure, but if I apply more pressure it goes another 1/4".
But, I cannot see where the ujoints are twisting any and I replaced the rear hub a while back, so I guess I am down to a bad half shaft or the piece that connects the half shaft to the hub.
Unless somebody else can recommend something else to look for?
