Putting in a new opti & waterpump. I have new seals for both splined shafts. These are the seals that fit in the timing chain cover. Here's my dilemma. I need to remove the old seals and don't want to damage or remove the timing chain cover. How to go about removing the seals?
I've thought of a small slide hammer with a screw attachment, drill a small hole in the seal and slide hammer it out...but I can't locate a slide hammer small enough without removing the radiator.
For those of you that have done this...did you just pry the old seal out? I'm a little hesitant to pry against the aluminum cover in fear I might warp or crack it.
My 96 has 3 seals. From top to bottom they are: Water Pump, Opti and crank.
The top one has a slot on the face that a small screwdriver will fit - piece of cake.
The other 2 can be removed with some patience and a seal remover and/or screwdriver. You can drill a hole in the metal facing or drive the screwdriver through it. Put a small strip of wood between the tools and the cover.
The whole job is a pita, but hang in there - patience helps.
