Default Code Read-outs??

Do the "code read-outs" actually reveal the specific—the actual problem
ie: "bad opti", "fuel pump", etc.? Or does it generalize ie: "ignition"
problem, "fuel" system problem, etc.? And then you have to diagnose those broader groups (ignition, fuel, etc.) to determine the specific
problem? Thankyou once again.

generally codes can be caused by several different things. i.e. a code that is for a lean or rich condition could be caused by anything from a bad injector to a worn out o2 sensor.

You can look up your specific codes here (Thanks to MikeC4 who posted this earlier):

http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/

If you have an FSM, you can take it further and use the diagnostic steps given for each code to (sometimes) nail down the issue.

The codes or DTC's are quite specific but they do NOT indicate that a part is bad. A DTC indicates that the PCM sees a voltage reading it does not recognize as normal for the operating conditions based on remaining sensor input.
Proper troubleshooting of a DTC requires the Factory Service Manual and often a DVOM (digital volt/ohm meter) to check the entire circuit. Many DTC's are caused by poor connections or wiring problems, not a defective part, the troubleshooting procedure in the FSM will systematically eliminate each possibility until a solution is found.
Lots of people bypass the diagnosis process and throw parts at the problem hoping to get lucky, sometimes they do but buying a service manual will usually pay for itself in parts savings alone.
The Haynes and other aftermarket books are nearly useless, but you should understand that the factory or Helms manuals are written for trained technicians not amateurs, basic understanding of automotive systems and theory is assumed, they do not hold your hand or teach Autoshop 101. Hope that helps, good luck.

No. Just a place to start looking. Use the code with the FSM.
