Default Opti Questions

My waterpump leaked on my Opti until my car would not start. I have both components removed and have a couple of question that I haven't seen in other posts.

I've opened up the Opti and aside from being wet it looks pretty good. No carbon traking or serious corrosion. However, when I spin the rotor it does not feel smooth. There is no radial or axial play but it feels almost like there are small detents in part of the rotating assembly. Is this normal?

My Opti had quite a bit of cooked oil sludge on the exterior. There were no o-rings on either end of the water pump coupler as shown in the factory manual. Can these disappear or am I seeing a previous sin?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!

Joe

WP - There are no O-rings associated with the coupler itself. There is a O Ring on the water pump drive shaft near the base, and there is an O ring on the drive shaft from the front of the engine. I think these are the 2 O rings you see in your diagram.

Opti - Sounds like your bushing is shot. If you spin the splined drive by hand(or rotor as you have done), it should be smooth and consistent with no "binding" feel. The bushing is a non-repairable item unfortunately.

How many miles on your vette ?

You need to replace both. Best bang for your buck would be to order from "thepartsladi" :

My car has 90K miles.

I'm not sure I would describe as binding but it's definitely not a smooth bearing.

Thanks!

Do it right, buy the MSD Optispark... it will solve all your problems and it's construction makes the OEM one look and feel like the piece of garbage it is.

The partladi is where I got my opti when mine crapped out at 90k miles. Less than $300 shipped for a new delphi unit isnt bad. Just make sure you get a real ac delco or delphi unit. There are alot of cheap imitations out there that are being sold as OEM.

You need to replace yours anyways so do it right. If you dont go with an ewp and go with a stock replacement, tap the weephole on the underside of the pump and place a small pipe nipple in it, then attache a hose to it so that when it leaks it will not hit the opti.

Also thepartsladi is a good place to purchase a new water pump.
