Good idea..they do work...also some auto trannys come from the factory w/magnet on the inside of the pan..another good idea.
Indeed. Mine has that in the back corner. I have first hand experience with the transmission pan magnet and it does catch metal shavings! I just wanted to get a few opinions from experienced hot rodders. Thank you very much gentleman. I am going to do it. Seems logical and anything to make the car last longer is certainly a plus in my book!
It's a good concept. I personally went with a filter magnet, so that I would be throwing away anything it caught when I change the filter, but it's just a different means to the same end.
At the same time I did that, I got THIS, an oil drain valve. It fixes one of the worst parts of changing the oil; dropping the bolt into the drain pan!
I went to the hardware store and bought a few strong magnets and am about to place them on the oil filter. This way I know what Magnet I am getting and that it truely works. Those magnets along with the drain plug and a good filter should really help things if metal shavings were to come out. Hopefully, it wiont come down to that.
Magnetic drain plug is good, stay away from the magnets sold to attach to the oil filter. Had one from one of the Corvette suppliers. One day I found it was running real rough after driving a few miles of a perfect cruise. a few days later crawled under it and found the magnet had moved over to my tranny housing. Started car ran like crap. Shut down car removed magnet from housing and car ran like new again. Hmmm.....
My opinion is the magnetic drain plug is great. Oil filter magnet is crap. Again just my opinion.
