I have an 89 with a stock L98 engine. It was running fine when I shut it off. I drove it the next morning and it ran fine for about 30 miles. I shut it off, took care of business. When I restarted it, and stepped on it to enter the highway, it choked down and shut off. I got it restarted, and it would only hit approximately 5mph for about 2 miles, then gradually picked up speed, then ran fine for about 1 week. Now, if I step on the accelerator, it chokes down, hesitates, and wants to shut off. I've changed the fuel filter, cleaned, and recharged my air filter. It's not throwing any codes.
Thinking there has to be a blockage, I removed the exhaust from the Y pipe back, took it for a run. Same issues, only I expected it to be loud as hell. Wrong! It still sounded stock. The back cat is still on, and appears to be flowing.
Mine ran rough and surged at low speed, hesitated when picking up from a closed throttle. I replaced all 8 plugs (I know it's torture) and now the car runs great!
Would the plugs\wires, or fuel injectors cause the car to sound quiet, even with the Y pipe and mufflers off? I mean it's quieter than prior to the problem, with the flowmasters on.
Changed the plugs, wires, checked the timing, dist. cap appears fine. Still step on the accelerator and it bogs down. The engine revs up, no forward acceleration, and it chokes down.
I'm not a pro mechanic but if you say when you step on the accelerator and the engine revs up but the car bogs down, then your problem may lie with the automatic tranny......check tranny fluid?
