Default New Alternator not working

The Alternator in our 89 stopped working (so we thought) and was pulling directly off the battery. Alt was not producing anything. Replaced Alt. same thing, nuthin! Thought maybe it was a fluke and we got a Lemon Alt. Installed second Alt. and guess what? Nuthin! Now it is obviously not the Alt. Could it be the Computer? Anybody have any clues?

Nah, it's going to be something very simple.

The output wire from the alternator to the battery will be fused in some way. Also the inputs to the voltage regulator will begin at the fuse box. You most likely have a blown fuse or fusible link depending on how the 89 is equipped. Next up would be a broken wire and it could be broken inside the insulation where it isn't obvious. Tracking the problem down will require a multimeter and a wiring diagram. The diagram is available on Autozone's website.

Did you probe the positive terminal on Alt. with a voltmeter and observe expected fluctuation in voltage reading while throttling the the TB from idle to let's say 2K rpm ???

You should have battery voltage to the larger red wires that attach to the back of the alt....if not they have fusible links..you should have ignition voltage on the blue wire when ign. switch is in the run position....the brown wire runs to the alt./charge light on the dash...does the light come on at all ...or stay on all the time ?

Measure the resistance between the positive battery terminal and the output terminal on the alternator. It should be the same as touching the ohmeter probes together, if not, you likely have a blown fusible link in the red output wire on the alternator.

Default And the winner is!

And the winner is... M. Shumacher! It was a stupid fuse to the gauge! I even told my son Jake (it is his Corvette) that it might be a fuse or wire related after the second Alternator failure, but he is 18yrs old and knows EVERYTHING! So I busted his chops all weekend!
Thanks Guys for your help!!!
