had H-16 code. removed MSD opti(about 8 months old) and sent it to MSD. They warranted it,as it had a lot of oil in it. Reinstalled it and no start.I have a jacobs ignition as well. I bypassed it and went from the coil to ground. It has a weak spark and when assembled no start!!
Clues????????

First off, if your Opti had a lot of oil inside, you need to replace the Opti seal on the timing cover. This is the most likely place for oil to leak and get inside the Opti. Are you certain that you correctly aligned the keyed spline drive in the cam ?

Did'nt look like an oil leak, more like road grime inside, the inlet vent seemed to be plugged and it was sucking from the outside seal. As for alignment,it only fits one way.
looking for cause of weak spark

ahhhh....sucking in the old road grime, I've had that problem before where the seals were weak....
A coil is wound with thousands of insulated wires(one continuos wire actually). A short along that path can reduce the voltage output. Coils don't often go bad....but then again....some do..

Eccept for the opti being oily,it would start and run from time to time.
Now that its clean and reassembled no start
What to do????

eccept is spelled except.
Are you getting <SPARK>
1) Did you correctly mount the Opti (The "keyed" spline drive will fit only one way, but unfortunately it can be forced on incorrectly)
2) is the coil outputting spark ?
3) did you pull a plug and check for spark ?
Are you getting <FUEL>
1) Do you have fuel pressure ? check with fuel pressure gauge
Are you getting <AIR>
1) depress accelerator pedal slightly to open throttle butterfly while trying to start. If car starts, your IAC could be stuck closed.

Thanks for the spell check !!
1)Opti mounted:good
2)Coil giving weak spark to ground
3)Did not check plugs for spark
Did give it the gas when trying to start.
Jacobs said that the spark plug wires should ohm @ 150 per foot(carbon core)
its like it was almost better before the opti got cleaned!!
You should check for spark at the plug next. If you do get spark, this will tell you that your ICM is working and Opti.
How do you make the determination that the coil spark is weak ? A coil puts out somewhere on the order of a whopping 40KV. Do you check the distance that the lighting bolt can jump ???? (I have no idea how to check the potency of a coil.....so I am curious)

In the past I have held the coil wire close to ground and watch the spark. If good its a strong blue spark, this spark is hard to see.
