I finally took this thing off last week when I changed the belt, but I think it has a purpose. At low RPMs my A/C is squeeling ... just figured that out today in traffic coming into work ... It must create some load or force that helps prevent that. Am I wrong?
Another thought -- Can the spring in the belt tensioner wear out? Mine seems too loose. I can just pull on the belt and move the tensioner fairly easily? Maybe that's it ... ???
Bingo! Yes, the tensioner can and does lose some of it's strength. I was surprised at just how much when I replaced mine last year. ('90) BTW, make sure you change your belt every year or two even if you think it "looks" good. They go through a lot, and they get baked under the hood.
Yeah, belt looked fine, just stretched. It was about a year old or so.
The power steering was acting up, and JASONL recommended checking the belt. Seemed to fix the problem. But that tensioner must have been part of the problem too.
I noticed on the computer screen at the parts desck the other night at AUTO ZONE that a belt tensioner was not available for my car ... Do I need to go through a GM parts dealer, like The Last Detail??

I could be wrong, but didn't they take them off starting in 90?
