Default ZF fill hole bolt socket

How much space is there to the side of a ZF fill hole, I am ordering a socket to get the bolt out, but the socket is 4 inches long, add 2 inches for the breaker bar, and that is 6 inches, is there enough room on the side to get this on there? MSC has a 30% of buy 3 sale, but the shortest 17MM hex socket they have is 4 inches overall length, is this going to work for me? I know I could look but I am at work and the car is not.

Thanks

I got mine out with a 17mm hex wrench and a boxed end wrench over the end for added leverage. It worked out good.

I dont think you have 6" to work with though, which is why the hex wrench is preferred over the socket.

This probably sounds really dumb but I got a bolt with the head the same size as the fill plug head and welded it in. Then I screwed a nut onto the threads, welded it in place and now you take the plug out with a 3/4 wrench.

4 inches plus breaker bar (and don't forget a torque wrench to re-install) might be a bit tight.

just measured my 1/2 drive 17mm hex (brand SK) and it is only 3.5 inches, and as I recall it was a bit tight getting it in to the plug on our 94 coupe.

I don't remember where I bought the SK 'socket', but might have been at one of the local auto parts places (Napa?).

Thats not a bad idea. My only concern would be how long it could hold up like that.

A "hex bit socket' is generally a length of "hex stock/bit" secured in an appropriate six point socket with a hex set screw lock! Cut the hex stock to the "desired" length and move on!!

Worked just fine.
