409 SS Mandrel bent duals
No mufflers, just going from my headers to the Magnaflows I already have.
crush bent (what 99% of exhaust shops do) is still a deal... Even aluminized mild steel that's crush bent is reasonable at $400.
Some exhaust facts for you to chew on:
Exhaust shops typically don't mandrel bend pipe. Mandrel benders utilize special consumable mandrels that go INSIDE the pipe during the bending process to maintain a constant ID for the radius of the bend, and are used primarily for production work (like exhaust manufacturers).
Exhaust shops use what are called compression (nicknamed crush) benders, which do exactly as is implied..crush the pipe from the outside to bend it, and consequently the ID (inner diameter) of the pipe is necked down through the radius of the bend.
The average mandrel bender costs around $75,000 to $100,000, not including replacement mandrels.
The average crush bender costs around $4000 to $10,000, making it the choice of 99% of exhaust shops.
None of this takes into account the cost of exhaust tubing, mufflers, etc.
Our shop offers what we call "Mandrel Fab" systems which are fabricated from mandrel-bent sections of pipe, custom fit to the individual vehicle, or we crush bend systems... depends on what the client wants.
Blackbird's exhaust is 3" mandrel-fabbed from the headers back, and it cost me more than $400 in materials (labor I didn't count, but time to fab was about 5 hours)
- still "in process"
- And complete from the rear.So... if the system you're referring to indeed is mandrel bent, I'd jump on it!
