Default Brake caliper question.

I put new brakes and rotors on the whole car no problem, but the front calipers move in the caliper mounts. It isnt much but there is play. is this ok. i haven't driven it yet, not cause of this ,my seats are still at upholsterers. Its a 90 and doesnt have the J55 brakes.

I remember mine moving a LITTLE when I changed my pads, and has stopped excellent for the last few months... I would make sure the caliper mount bolts are torqued correctly... I remember breaking the torque on those bracket bolts, and they are TIGHT... hope I eased your worry somewhat... I'd use good judgement on exactly how much movement is too much...

Yes, the calipers must be able to slide in the brackets to be able to compensate for the wear of the pads. As the pistons are only on one side the caliper will slide towards the pistons as the pads wear down.

Cheers,

I replaced my pads recently ... make sure you attach the little clips on the end lower end of the pads by the retainer pin, these aren't wear indicators, but tension springs. You shouldn't have any play up/down. Maybe just a little play left/right.

I would also consider replacing those spring clips with new ones

Caliper mounting bolts were loose on mine, tightened them to spec and no problems. A bolt came off one time and destroyed the caliper and rotor!
