Default need comfirmation on half shaft

Been fighting a bad clunk when shifting from 1-2 and 2-3, well went to replace the ujoints(again) and one cap slid right on with almost no effort.
Is this a sign of a bad half shaft?

WOW, That's bad!.............

Couple of questions that may or may not be relevant in the long run, but first things first!

1. Was this on just one side of the 1/2 shaft or both ends? (same U-joint, different results=bad hole)
2. What U-Joints did you use? (just a sanity check to make sure they are the right replacement U-joints)
3. Do you have any way to check the ID of the 1/2 shaft compared to that of the other side? (see if anything is out of spec, or wrong size hole to cap ratio)
4. Does a visual show any elongation of the 1/2 shaft end? (should be somewhat visible if the hole is bad)

With 1/2 shafts being relatively cheap, and members here having some laying around, I'd just replace it.

I hope this helps!

This was a brand new Brute Force ujoint, havent tried to put another ujoint in there yet.
Wish I did have something to measure the ID, old ujoints were only 3 mths old.
Tried the light trick and could not see any light w/cap on.

What's the number on that Brute force? And are you sure that it's the right 1/2 shaft U-Joint and not the Driveshaft one? HENCE me asking if it worked on one side and not the other?

It is the right one, the cap on the other side had to be pressed on.

Well, Unless Brute Force just all of a sudden starting having major quality control issues, or someone was high at work when YOUR J-joint was packed up, then I'm voting for a bad U-Joint Hole!

Just go to the For Sale section and ask to see if anyone has one. I have one but I'm going to need it for my 55 Chevy PU.

Check with Y-ME and see if Dan has any laying around, he should be able to help!

Hey, no problem at all..............That's a good part number from NEAPCO, so there goes THAT theory!

Either way, goodluck and try to catch up with Dan.

Nothing you've mentioned confirms that possibly a cap on the joint was swapped in the package! It happens frequently in the parts stores! If you've got your old joints still hanging around, take a couple of those caps and try them in the end yoke! Take your half shaft to a parts store and have them try an "off the shelf" new joint "first"!

An inexpensive vernier caliper is a wise buy! You'll use it often!!!!

I would doubt that you've "demolished" just one eye on the end yoke!

Dave good advice but check what I asked in Post #2

3. Do you have any way to check the ID of the 1/2 shaft compared to that of the other side? (see if anything is out of spec, or wrong size hole to cap ratio)
