is it really feasible to tackle this job by oneself with only hand tools? Everyone one here seems to have a real tough time with it. I called the local tirediscounters and they said they would install the ones I bought for $200 (includes my 4 wheel alignment I need).

Since I was doing the bushings at the same time it would have been crazy expensive to have the work done by a shop.
If you are just doing the rear bearings and you can get the shop to agree to a "not to exceed" quote of $200 to install bearings you supply it would be worth it because that would mean out of service time of 2-3 hours. Mine was out of service 5 weeks cause I could only work on it over the weekends.

Yes it can be done with hand tools. You need a T-55 and a 36 MM socket (preferably a 6 points) You will also need a jack, jack stands, light, maybe a breaker bar... Other items may help but these are the basics. The toughest part is breaking the three bolts lose from the back of the knuckle. It it hard and you will need some penetrating spray to help.
On the other hand. $200 with a four whell alignment is a pretty good deal when you factor in your time and what you may have to spend to acquire the tools needed, if any? Drop it off and pick it up. Done! But then again, it depends on how much confidence you have in the shop.

I'm an old grumpy guy with a bad back and I was able to get it done. One of the torx bolts was so tight I had to hold the wrench while someone used their leg to push on it. Don't forget you'll need some long extensions too.
