Default Clutch Replacement Cost??

What should it cost to replace a clutch in a 96 LT4 (parts & labor)? Is the flywheel typically replaced or just resurfaced? I have around 44K on my car and getting some shaking when releasing the clutch pedal. My local Chevy dealer quoted $2,400 and I laughed. I figured around $1,500 - $1,700 total based on the cost of the parts looking online. Thanks

I had a shop quote me between $700.00 to $1200.00 depending on the clutch I wanted to use.

For the benefit of a doubt, perhaps, in the 2400.00 quote, maybe a new dual mass flywheel is included?

A dealership will replace the dual mass flywheel, as it cannot be machined. The cost of the FW is somewhere in the $700-900 range. It is possible to keep the flywheel depending on its condition. A good tech can sand the rough spots. Did this on mine about 60K miles ago, working fine.

The Valeo clutch kit will come in at about $200-250. This is the stock replacement. The book rates this as a 10 hr job @ 90-125/hr, depending on the shop rates.

You could go aluminum flywheel which will cost less, or f-body single mass, will require grinding and balancing. This will probably cost less parts wise and many see it as an upgrade. I plan on this when the time comes. Although you get more tranny noise.

Whoever does the work, make sure they check the clutch fork and pivot ball, I had a wear issue with this later on.

What would cause a severe clutch chatter in reverse gear only after a new clutch job?? any ideas? I mean the whole car shakes violently in reverse when slipping the clutch out...after the clutch is slipped out, its OK....

I have a 96 LT4 Coupe and spent about $1,500.00 on OEM duel mass fly wheel and GM clutch parts. 4 hours labor at $90.00 a hour at local Corvette Shop. Figure about 2k parts
and labor.

Not sure about this. But my experience was that I would hear a banging noise when I pushed the pedal all the way down. Turned out the pivot ball had grooves worn it and caused the clutch fork to over extend and rub the pressure plate.

Yours could be just a matter of the new clutch having more "grab" than you're accustomed to. I think the ZF's really hate being in reverse.

Could be a couple of things. Oil perhaps on the Clutch surface from, maybe,a leaking rear main seal or broken springs in the Flywheel causing the disc to bottom out so to speak.

Hey, thanks for the reminder, I need to plan for this and also believe I'll go with the f-body flywheel. Would you happen to have any internet links that discuss it, what parts are needed, etc ? Thanks alot.

Hey everyone I know I have a C5 but can someone tell me if they figured out that problem? My car developed a bad chatter vibration problem yesterday while in reverse. The car shakes and has bad chatter when in REVERSE or NEUTRAL only. If its in forward gears its OK, or if its in neutral WITH THE CLUTCH DOWN its OK. But neutral with the clutch up I get the chatter too... weird! Any suggestions?
