I've had two sets of Falken Ziex tires - one set on my Honda  and the other set on my vette. Though they are not super sticky, they are Z-rated AND have a 30k mile warranty. Try to find that on another Z-rated tire. Plus, the vette tires (255/50zr16 I think) from Sears (worlds most overpriced store) cost me $120 each. I like em, but I would not use them for autox. They also have the water channel in the middle. The tread looks cool too.
If you're looking for good life. My mom went 30k miles on Firestone SZ50s on her Impala SS. The SZ50s grip really well in the rain even on tread life indicators. She is now on Kuhmos. We like them so far, and they are really cheap from tirerack. Some friends have Falkens. They last for a long time but you pay for it in grip. Look at the other tires topic being discussed now if you want more grip.
I had SZ50's previously on my car and they were great tires, and really shone on wet roads, etc.
After that I switched to nitto's, and if you are looking for straight line traction in a streetable package they are difficult to beat.
Currently I have Yokohama AVS Sport's. They aren't up to the standards of the SZ50's in wet weather, but I would have to give them the edge in cornering/dry traction. The tread pattern also looks really "mean" on a 315 rim ;)
Depends on what my wallet was saying.. low end would be the Kumho's.. higher end the Firestone SZ50EP's... the Firestones are a fantastic tire wet or dry.
Money is no object -MICH. PILOT SPORTS appx $285
Money is a second thought - Firestone SZ's appx $220
Money is important and so is traction
1. Yoko A520's appx $145 great Dry traction, wet is not the best
2. Kumho SUPRA 712's appx $115 good dry better wet then the yoko's
Money to fix the car after it slides out and hits a pole- Goodyear ULTRAS $$$$
I have driven all of the above tires and that is pretty much how they panned out although if you live in adry climate the Yoko AVS sports are a better choice then the Firestones. Please don't buy the ULTRA's they are S H I T and look bad on the wheel as well very funny looking sidewall. :seeya
