I was wondering if anyone has installed an aftermarket tachometer in their early C-4, and if you have, do you have any pics of it?
I'd much rather have a regular analog tach, but don't know how it would look.
I had one hoseclamped to the steering column in my 68 camaro that looked rather cheesy, but I don't really see anywhere else you'd be able to mount one in a C-4.
Re: Anyone install an aftermarket tachometer? (cohocarl)
I'm getting ready to install one myself. I don't think mounting it on the steering column is 'cheesy'. Nothing wrong with that approach. I've considered mounting a tach on the dash pad but I don't wanna put any holes in it. Perhaps that's the best place in terms of visibility. I'll price a replacement dash pad before I make my decision.
I'm doing this because I think it's easier to read a traditional sweeping needle style tach. The factory low res bar graph is almost useless IMHO. At idle you can't tell the difference between 901 rpm and 999 rpm. When you're going WOT and shifting gears the tach just doesn't keep pace with the actual revs. I don't think I'm being too picky here. I will admit that I'm not a fan of the digital dash.
Re: Anyone install an aftermarket tachometer? (AS84)
Sorry, I didn't notice the other post. :conehead
I remember seeing a post a while ago about a "filter" or something you have to remove (or install?) when wiring up an external tach(?), or do you just splice into the tach lead off of the distributor?
Re: Anyone install an aftermarket tachometer? (mackeyred96)
I've got a cheesy one hosed clamped to the column.
If you saw the one on my 68 Camaro, you'd agree it looked bad. I couldn't find a large enough hose clamp, so I took 3 small ones and chained them together.
Re: Anyone install an aftermarket tachometer? (mackeyred96)
I saw one pedastal mounted to the dash on the far left side of the steering wheel. It was a 5" autometer and it only blocked the vent. The headlight switch was not blocked. It looked a little less "tacky" I guess, and when the driver's door was closed, it was hardly noticeable from the outside.

whose got any pics of where there tacs are? just wondering what it looks like with a aftermarket tach
On the other post, Vette92 has a pic of his on a 90-96 dash, but I haven't seen any pics with an 84-89 dash.
I've been doing some rough measuring, and it looks like a Sunpro CP2012 (only 2" deep) would fit in the upper right corner in front of the dash tach and I should still be able to get the key in and out. The only problem with that is I'd have to fab a mounting bracket of some sort that would bolt to something inside the dash to the left of the center vents/upper right of dash tach bezel. (may not even work)
This tach has rather small dimensions compared to some others I've looked at. It MAY be small enough to work on the column, but I don't think I'd be able to tilt it up all the way, and it may block the digi readouts of fuel, temp, etc.
I like the white faced AutoGage #2303, 3 3/4" face, but it's 4 3/8" dia overall and 3 3/4 deep. I think it would be a little big for either location.

I have also looked at the #2303.I currently have may shift light mounted on the steering column.I fits fine,if you don't need to tilt the wheel in an extreme upward position;which I do not.
I decided that the smaller above mention tach would not be a fit for the column mount.I will fabricate a bracket off the column or the dash pad to position the tach in the most favorable position to me.
As a bracket racing my first concern is functionality first and aesthetics second.
If you are racing IMO a shift light and/or aftermarket tach will serve you well.If you occasionally hammer it a small aftermarket would be an option.
I plan on installing an aftermarket tach before the race season begins.I will share the details then ,if you have not completed the install first.
Good luck and let me know how you progress .I may even install one of those cheesy big tachs, but Iam the only one voting on it.
