Default Heads Q

Not really vette related but I've got two spare sets of 10207643 LT1 head castings, one I've reworked and the other set is still dirty.

My son has a 92 chev truck with a 350 and I'm pondering milling a couple holes in the intake gasket surface of the Gen II heads where the usual location for water passages on the Gen I 's were and encouraging him to slap those on his old truck.

Anyone know if there's anything more to it than that, to make Gen II heads go onto a Gen I engine ? Thanks alot.

From what I've read, yes there's more to it if his block isn't designed for them (reverse cooling).

I've seen a post from one guy on another Forum who wrote that "it can" be done, but since the coolant passages are so different, it's more than a notion.

Maybe some here can fill in the blanks for you.

I feel embarrassed for even asking now that I've looked at the Gen II head. There's an oil flow-thru passage at the ends of the heads that would need to be closed up and other passages drilled. Could be done, but I think I'll forget it. Have a good day.

Those are coolant steam holes. On the LT1, their's a hose connection running from one head to the other are the firewall end of the heads supposedly to release any build up of steam.

The holes are drilled and tapped at both ends of the heads to allow the heads to be installed either way. The forward most holes get plugged.

They're a different animal.

Yep. I was referring to the oil return passages. Sorry for the confusion. The steam tube holes are easily plugged. Creating coolant outlet passages on the intake gasket surface is where the challenge would be. GM didn't put enough metal there for a conversion to be a simple or even worthwhile endeavor. Kind of reminiscent of the 351-C / boss heads but those were easily modifiable to swap onto a 289.
