Default Need help selecting torque converter.... <-- click here :)

Hello!

It is time for my trusty old 92 to go have its transmission rebuilt. Since the transmission is coming down I figure its time to invest in a good torque converter, problem being I have no idea how to select the proper converter for my application.

Quick rundown of my mods:

92-A4
3.07 gears (yes , I removed the 2.59s in favor of these.... alot of work , but well worth the 200 bucks)
Hooker Super Comp headers / Cat elims / Corsa power pulse exhaust.
SLP Cold air induction
MSD Optispark / MSD wires / ect

Im sure there are a few more mods , just can't think of them at the moment. The key to remember here is the long block is stock. I had it on the chassis dyno a couple of years ago (which was only about 3k miles ago) and it put right at 278rwhp / 310ftlbs to the wheels, the motor was completely stock at that time, corsa cat back being the only mod.

I would like a nice converter that will have a higher then stock stall , retain its lockup feature , and add some pep in the step outa the hole.

The car is driven on the street, gets maybe 1k - 2k miles a year put on it (between the wife , work and kids no time). It will make occasional trips to the track, and has the occasional run in with a mustang or whatever at the stop light (which I ignore of course )

Any input on this would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I would get in touch with Pete Kane here on the forum.

I changed my rear gears (2.59 to 3.07) last fall and put one I got through him in to replace the OE one. It is a 2800 stall and I couldn't be happier. There are quite a few on CF that have purchased converters through him. I to have a basically stock car except for the Corsa and a few bolt on mods. It made all the difference in the car. I did get a performance tune and had the the PCM adjusted to make up the difference the gear change had on the speedo. Mine is a '96 so it's pretty limited to what a tuner can do with it in stock form.

Hope this helps

Another Pete K converter fan, he can be a busy guy and may take awhile to reply but it will be worth the wait, you won't be disappointed.

Forgot to ask :I will be needing a aftermarket tranny cooler with the addition of a slightly higher stall?

It is recommended to have one. The higher stall will heat the tranny very quickly under spirited driving. A Derale pan will also help lower temps, probably about 10-15 degrees. I had one but had to remove it because my car is lowered. It reduces your ground clearence about an inch or so. The two together will keep it a lot cooler. A cooler alone will probably be good enough though. I use a B&M Super cooler and I'm very pleased with it. Oh.....forgot to mention, you will also be needing some new rear tires very soon.

2600-2800 stall would give you a nice compromise, in my opinion. It will give you the launch you want, and still have good street manners, and make minimal heat. I would never discourage a cooler, but the right converter on a weekend summer car may not need one with that stall.

Pete you have a PM !

Also , I will go ahead and get a tranny cooler. No use killing a fresh transmission because I didn't want to spring for a cooler. I just kind of dread the PITA its gonna be to get it in place in front of the radiator.

Here is a link to a post showing my cooler installation which is different from most. I do not have a gauge so I can't give you any before and after temps to confirm effectiveness, but no problems with the transmission since installation. This setup does make for a very easy install.

I went with a 2800 stall Vigilante. For daily driving you won't even know it's there. As I continue to add mods I'm wondering if I should have gone to a 3200 stall.

PM returned

Wise choice. Cooler is always a nice touch.
Thanks to all for the kind words.
