How often does this need to be done. I heard that not changing it on a regular basis will result in the fuel pump going bad. Also how much $$ does the part go for? Thanks
fuel filters arent that expensive prolly lookin under 10 bucks at a part store replace it every 15k it should be fine the only way it will really get clogged is if you have crud on the bottom of your tank and when you get low and it goes through the strainer on the pump it hits the filter
Have fun doing it!!!! There's lots of threads on this site by folks who have had all sorts of experiences, both good and bad, changing the fuel filter. Probably worth a look if you plan on doing it yourself.
A better way? ~~~~~
Not necessarily better ~~~ but different.
The first time I replaced my fuel filter, I ended up with fuel irritation on my arms and back from laying in the puddle for an hour. I figured that there had to be a better way.
Here's how I did it the next time:
After relieving the pressure, removing the gas cap, etc. I jacked up the front of the car and removed the right front wheel. Next I removed the rear half of the fender well. This opened up the area so that I could:
1. Loosen the fuel line retaining bracket nut.
2. Reach the fuel filter from the top by reaching down, instead of reaching up.
Any (and all) fuel that drained out didn't affect me at all. I had plenty of access (let me re-phrase that) I had as much if not more access to the filter from the top than I did from the bottom.
I generally don't like to repeat what others have already said, as I don't want to try to one up someone ~~~~ but in the case of Cautions, I think it is warranted......so:
CAUTION
1. Do not do this while the catalytic converter is hot.
2. Do not lay a hot light bulb under the car while changing the filter.
3. Be especially careful that no sparks are generated from static electricity
Service manual says to replace only when required. The fuel filter is after the fuel pump so I don't see how it can burn it up unless the filter being clogged up causes too much strain and that causes it to fail?? Did mine from under and it was a royal PITA :smash: Relieve the fuel pressure first from the schrader valve on the fuel rail to avoid a gas attack. I bought a fuel pressure guage with the pressure relief port/hose for $40 at Pepboys.
Service manual says to replace only when required.
What he says.....
It seems to me that if they (service industry) thought they could make money off it, they (the manual) would say to CHANGE IT! But, the official 3 inch thick manual says let it be, unless it seems that the engine isnt getting fuel. I dunno. THey also say the spark plugs and wires should be good for 100K, but I felt mine ran a bunch better after changing them at 70K. Oh well.
