I'm looking at replacement balancer options. A stock type is 6.75" and weighs 8.16 lbs. A 6.12" weighs 4.63 lbs. Is running one that's 5/8" smaller bad?
Interesting, is the pulley the same as the one for the larger balancer, I wonder if 2lbs. would make a difference. The frisbee doesn’t weight any where near 2lbs and dose when removed, so you would think it would.
Why would it be bad? You are still internaly balanced.. I replaced an 8" damper with a 6 & 3/8" Fluidampr (would have to look up the exact size)
7 or 8 years ago on a 355 marine engine. Those motors run under full load ALL the time. Never a problem to this day. Your motor is still internally balanced?
nutz4c4, yes it's still the stock long block. I'm thinking if I had a stroker I'd stay with a larger/fluid type dampener.
Guys, yes the pulley is the same it just bolts to the balancer. A smaller one will absorb less but I figure this one to be better then stock so maybe it's a horse a piece. More vibes in the engine would produce more wear. It doesn't balance the engine so it's weight in that regard doesn't matter.
Mine was doing the same I just replaced it, not a bad on a L98 couple hours.
Do they re-adjust the timing mark so it lines up with the timing tab on the smaller balancer?
You might know this already but a fast & easy way to loosen the crank bolt is to use a 5/8 socket & 1/4 drive ratchet set to loosen, brace it against the frame drivers side and just bump the key once, the engine rotation breaks the torque on the crank bolt.

OH I get it it, sure that sounds like it will help rev quiker for sure.
I would not hesitate to go smaller, but I would get an ATI Fluid balancer.... they say, "the larger the mass, the better the damper performs in terms of harmonics"
