Looking into changing gears on a D36 from std to 3.73. Wondering what final drive rpm i'll get. When ordering gears do I also need to order the carrier.
Some LT1 owners with the A4 find 3.73's work well, but doubt they would be a good choice with a crossfire, even too steep for the L98's due to the torque curve.
I tried the ratio in my 93 with LT1 power and found the high RPM annoying at freeway speed, I have since changed to 3.45.
I believe you will find 3.07 to be a better choice.
2500 rpm nets 73 mph with my 3.73. At least that's what the gauges said. My usual mpg is 15 - 18 if I get on the freeway. I like the 3.73 and my shift kit...closest I'll come to a race track feel.

If that´s correct, than there isn´t much difference with my 2.59 A4 doing 2000 rpms at 75 mph.
There is a difference, but I thought it would be more.
Anyone know of a way to calculate this for every final gear?
3.73's may be a bit much for a stock Crossfire. I am running 3.45's in my 84... I have been quite satisfied with the overall "feel" with this ratio. Your 84 came stock with 3.07:1 gears.
My Crossfire is basically stock except for a ported intake and .030 over bore.
there is a guy on DC vettes that has them in his 84 and loves them. He posted a youtube video a while ago with them, and they are nice even for that car. there are not many c4 videos with gears, I will see if I can find it, but it looks like a blast, it's playing with a ta orsomething.
Thanks for the info so far guys. Do I need to change the carrier or can I just order a set of gears and bearings. There is bugger all info here in Australia on this. Been quoted bit over a $1000 for gears alone and $350 for carrier and $350 for bearing set.
Should have mentioned earlier, I pulled off the injection and now has a 650 vac sec, roller rockers and a good cam.
hi guys, no 1 said if you can put 3.73's in the 2.59 pumpkin as a straight swap? i was looking to do that swap also and wanted to know what was involved as far as keeping or replacing the carrier and how involved it is. is it something i could myself or would i have to bring it in?

It depends on what carrier you have now, if you have a 2.59 you can order a 3.75 rear gear from Richmond I have 100 passes on mine with no issues and NO whine.
Well I have been in contact with a fella who supplies gears on flea bay and was told that I can't get 3.73 gears for my 3.07 diff......is this right? Only 3.54!!
I had to buy a ring and pinion set with a thick ring gear to go from 2:59 to 3.73. As far as durability, I stripped one of the pinion gears at the track one evening and had to drive it home. I replaced that gear and haven't had a problem as of yet. I have a D44 when I get around to it.

I had a set of "Yukon Gears" (3.73 for 3.07 carrier, Dana 36).
So, I know they make them. Availability may be another story, though.
