I have a 94 A4(in a camaro) that has about 110K miles on it, I don't know the history of it but the fluid smells bad.. It works fine as long it's not wide open throttle.. I wanted to get it flushed and fresh fluid but have been told twice not to do anything(not even basic service). That doesn't seem right to me..Any opinions out there on this??
If the trans allready has a problem new fuild will not fix it. The reason the shops don't want you to flush is because they know this and when the trans fails they get blamed. Make sure the fuild is at the right level and start saving for a rebuild. As the clutchs wear they will not grip as well make more heat, burning the fuild.
Trans fluid is extremely high detergent.
Replacing the fluid will sometimes case the dirt and debris that is hung up in all the nooks and cranies to wash out. This debris can jam a valve in a valve body and cause issues.
It is a catch 22. Bad fluid is bad, and good fluid could possibly cause an issue.
In my humble opinion, a filter and fluid change are worth the chance, but a professional flush should be avoided. By only changing the fluid in the pan, you will change approx 1/2 of the total capacity. Assuming sucess, 6 months later, drop the pan again and you will again dilute the crappy fluid with newer fluid.
Thanks to all for the info... I put a can of Lucas treatment in it and the shifting is now perfect.. I am recommending a fluid /filter change in a couple thousand miles.
