I had a SES light. I pulled the DTC and then I ran down the flow chart for the DTC in the FSM. In the end I arrived at the conclusion that the ECM was at fault by using all the steps in that DTC's flow chart.
Mine was caused by the previous owner not fixing a bad sensor, that will kill a ECM/PCM over time.
The only sure ways(that I know) to tell if the ECM/PCM is bad is to replace it w/another ECM/PCM and see if that cures the problem or use a tech1 and multi meter to test out the voltage, if it is getting the correct signal from ECM/PCM and ohm it to check continuity.
When my ECM was bad it would flood the spark plugs. And it went bad all of a sudden, with no warning. Once I changed the ECM life was good again.

Can a bad ECM cause engine to mis and run like its down a couple cylinders ? I am trouble shooting through my 89. I've replaced injectors, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, compression test(all 180) so about all thats left is is ECM. Car runs like ir down a cylinder.
Thanks, didn't mean to hijack thread but I was thinking ecm would be my next thought.

Funny you should mention that.
Mine is missing occasionally, and thats what got me to thinking ECM. Sometimes its fine. Other times, not so much. I've heard similar stories where the ECM was the culprit.

I'm sure mine is original, where can I find the ecm ? The guy I purchased it from only changed the oil every 3000 miles and never did anything else to the car. It is fairly low milage 48K.

Passenger side, under the dash. Remove the plastic piece with the light in the footwell.
Mine constantly threw code 43 (bad knock sensors). I replaced the sensors, didn't fix it. Finally, I cut the wires leading to the sensors and put in place fixed resistors of the correct size - still had code 43. Replaced the ECM, all fixed.
Do a search on my user name and read all about the problems I have with my '95. It was the ECM. Just be sure not to send yours to Auto Computer Exchange for repair.
LOL oops, the pic appears HUGE on my screen. It is the big chip next to the blue ribbon connector. Under it you can see what looks like dried sap, or discolored coating. Apparently the pins under that chips are shorting out and cooking it.
I have no clue what that chip controls though, probably injectors.
