96 base model auto

Getting p1642 "vehicle speed sensor output failure"

I used to get this occasionally. Now, after working on the car, it is constant. Comes on with just the key, don't even have to start the engine. Clear it, comes right back.

Anyway, I have the book and it is leading me on a merry chase trying to find the diagnostic for the speed sensor and related circuit. Section 8 has an entry in the index, but when you go there it is a blank page re-directing to section 6. Section 6 is the engine.

Anybody know where they hid this?

(btw, speedo and cruise both work fine)

Not sure if it helps but on my 87 auto the actual sensor is located drivers side transmission tailshaft housing

Default ECM is not seeing the cooling fans run

Uhhhh---I just looked up P1642---I'm showing it as a fault in the cooling fan circuit---one of the "checks" involves the #2 relay for the cooling fans ??

Yeah, I ran across that additional point of confusion also. My autoxray is claiming it is a speed sensor circuit code. I wonder if they blew it?

I got the code info from a online source that's been very reliable over the years ( I use them on the job and on occasion at home) I also have a older autoxray scanner I use at home, but as you say I suspect they may have screwed up in this case.
