LT4 w/ Hotcam. I had to go with a reman. crankshaft after bearing spun. Running Mobile 1 5w30. Is the Lucas a good idea, a bad idea?
Crank has been in for about 2K mi. Changed oil after first 500 mi. Engine runs great, sounds great. Just want to keep it that way until I can afford the proper forged steel crank. Daily driver by the way. 83K mi
Motors in good shape don't need additives, most additives are made to mask problems. As for Lucas Oil Stabilizer, I have seen a video showing it foaming in a motor simulation, so I personally would stay away from it. Im sure others will say they use it and its great but if it foams its not covering the metal completely and its not lubricating properly....WW

Thanks,
I don't really believe too much in the "mechanic in can" stuff either. I'm just wondering if there is something that really adds a little protection. I was looking at the Lucas because they've been around awhile.
You don't need any extra protection. If the crank/bearings are set up properly you are fine.If they arent nothing you can pour in the motor will help it.Now if you want more protection from your motor oil switch to Royal Purple.

Bobistheoilguy has a video proof of the stuff foaming up and how it does absoloutly nothing. Check it out. It's free and really interesting how it foams up.
Good point. I'll just change a little more often, like 2500 and keep the oil fresh. The work was done by some very well qualified people, and like I said, it's running great. Thanks for the input.

Why royal purple? What makes it better?
i'm curious too. what makes Royal Purple better than Mobil 1? I thought you can't get better than Mobil 1...
B&G Products MOA is suppose to be good stuff. I've wondered about adding it to my engine. Used to run B&G's extream bearing lubricant in a 600 Ninja. Cut a few 10ths off my quarter mile times and really made the transmission silky smooth.

I spent about 7 years of my corporate life as a chemist in a lab at LUBRIZOL, who makes additive packages for the vast majority of aftermarket and OEM factory fills for crankcase and transmission. Having a strong interest in engines and metallurgy prior to that time, some can imagine that I absorbed as much info as I could.
My current sentiment is that no stabilizing additive is generally necessary for most applications.
Well Zmax was sued by the FTC.....and it was shown to actually INCREASE bearing corrosion, and ZMAX was revealed as nothing more than food coloring and mineral oil in a fancy bottle.
Another snake oil that is actually HARMFUL to your engine.

I have found that almost everything in a bottle or can shilled by race/motorsports legends or peddled in thinly vieled infomercials labeled as TV shows (Truck U, Two Guys Garage, Gearz, ad naseum) is total and absolute GARBAGE that does nothing beneficial (other than lining someones pockets) and is most likely detrimental to whatever drivetrain component is claimed to save/repower/extend/rebuild/lubricate/flush/coat/whatever.

that being said, what is the best oil that can be put into one of our engines? i spent a lot of money on my build and don't want to see anything happen to it. i haven't gotten it into a car yet, but it will be done in the future.
I am not getting involved in an oil thread other than to say I use the following:
Shell Rotella 15-40 as a break in oil and in all engines I don't use synthetic in (and as a break in oil for new engines)
Shell Rotella Synthetic 5-40 in all engines I use synthetic in.
