Default Torque Converter Tech. Questions

I am looking at the Yank Converter web page, and Im trying to decide between the Yank Stealth, or the TQ> thruster 2800. Could you please help me with some of the terms in the specs and explain what the advantages and disadvantages are.

--------- Yank Stealth----- Yank TQ. Thruster 2800

Size ----- 12 in ------ 10.5 in
Stall speed ----- 2600 ----- 2800
weight ----- 52 lbs ------ 34 lbs
clutch size ----- 11.5 in ----- 10.5 in
clutch mat.----- stock ----- carbon ceramic
efficiency----- 94% ----- 97%
stall torque----- 1.9 ----- 3.01
ratio
anti-balloon ----- no ----- yes
plates
high capacity----- no ------ yes
stator
Retail price----- $389.00----- $594.99

There is a thread going, trying to get a group purchase on the yank converters. I know the price on the Stealth was $325.00 shipped and if enough people are interested then it will be an additional 10% off. I dont know the sale price of the TQ. Thruster yet. But I would appreciate any help in deciding which converter to pick.

I"ll take a shot at a copla of them.
You likely won't need a cooler with the 12" but will with the 10.5".
Rated stall speed is close so likely doesn't matter much.
The heavier unit likely also has more inertia when spinning up.
You might think the ceramic clutch would be more durable??
Higher efficiency means less power loss in the drive train.
Torque ratio at stall is obvious.
As for the $200 difference...you get what you pay for.

Hey 65Z01,

Dont mean to be to stupid on this but I dont quite get this. one is 1.9 The other is 3.01 Is this a mutliplier at full stall of the engine output? Also does it have any effect on part throttle response, like in normal street use? Thanks for your help.

Do not overlook the Stealth Thruster 2800. It also has a 2800 stall, 11 inchs, 40 lbs, with a 2.1 STR and it has a 98% efficiency.

I have read numerous threads on this topic and most non-strip guys do not want an STR over 2.0 or so. With street tires the wheels will just spin and smoke the rubber. Guys using 2.5+ STR have at lease drag radials if not often drag slicks.

I have looked into the SY3500, the recommended TC for 3.42 rear ends. That is most often orderd with a 1.6 STR for C5 Vetts.

STR is how hard it hits the tires like poping the clutch on a mn6. You got to match your traction capability (street, drag radials, drag slicks) to the STR.

Stall speed has more to do with how high the engine revs before the converter locks back up and acts more normal. Cars with head/cam packages require higher revs at idle and there for need a higher stall. Think about what rpm (how high) you want your motor to rev before is applies serious power to the wheels. The higher the rpms the greater the power applied will be.

Neither stall above 3000 or STR above 2.0 is very good for street only use.

I again draw attention to the Stealth Thruster 2800. I am leaning toward getting this myself. I need to know if it could be ordered with a 1.86 STR (lower than 2.1 standard) and what happens to its efficiency if you do get a lowered STR version.

If I could add one question of my own - Most advertising I see about the SY3500 call it the most efficient at 97% but the Stealth Thruster 2800 has apublished 98%. Any ideas on this?
