Default Acceptable shifter "rise"???

Background;

I put in a new clutch, flywheel, PP, master and slave over the winter and am getting ready for summer.

No I did not get the c-beam "plates."

I noticed the shifter rise up about 1/4" under load AFTER I started paying attention to it, because off all the threads I have read on here about it. So today I got under the car and re-torqued the c-beam bolts. 40 foot pounds on the transmission and 60 on the diff. They were not loose at all and pretty much already torqued (I used blue loctite on assembly).

I did not pay attention to the shifter during heavy acceleration before and am unsure if it always did this.

The "glue" stuff that was on the c-beam is pretty much gone but there are not chips left that would prevent the beam from sitting flush. That's about all I can think of that is different.

I did not inspect the motor mounts all that closely, other than they are there and connected.

I'm starting to get paranoid about this as the autocross season starts this weekend!

I have also read a thread stating there will always be some shifter rise, does about 1/4" sound about like the norm?

Thanks,
Mike

Could be the C-beam plates

Could also be you now noticing shot engine mounts.

1/4" doesnt sound too bad to me. There shouldn't be much movement at all there. Did you replace the C beam bolts or re-use the stockers?

It doesn't seem that bad, it may just be climbing up on old motor mounts. The engine rocks a little, not what I would consider bad however.

I re-used the stock bolts.

The rear suspension bushings, although not in new shape, are all there. The differential is not moving around.

I just am unsure if I am noticing a problem or just noticing something that's always been there.

I would recommend starting with either c beam plates or at least new bolts from GM. The threads stretch and when re-used you will never really get the right amount of grab on them.

Well I beat the snot out of the car today at a SOLO school. And nothing developed. So I'm probably fine, but I will look into buying new bolts although I can almost guarantee my dealer will say "can't help you" even if I show up with a valid G.M. part number...

As for c-beam plates, yeah they sure are nice, but I have a metal band saw, drill press and welder. I can't justify his price for them, although they sure are nice.
