hey guys and gals, new here, see my intro. but my pos. 84 that i acquired seems to have a oil temp issue. it starts out low, as normal, but will continually climb, until you shut it down. coolant temp stays around 200 to 210, but have seen the oil temp climb to 300 on a long drive. it does not smell burnt, and color is good... 20w/50 vr1. but i am in texas, very hot, and humid... whats up with this?
How long of a drive and what were the conditions of the environment? I have a 96 and the oil gauge indicates ~210°F driving it 30 miles one way with an outside temp around 80°F.
Two thoughts: 1.) No, oil temperature that hot and continuing to climb is not normal, and indicates a problem. 2.) Oil temperature climbing like that probably isn't "real", but a faulty temperature sensor or gage.
While it's Possible that the oil could really be doing what the gage says, it would mean a serious internal engine mechanical problem, like a spun bearing or something. You would know it...
On my 84 I usually see oil temps 10 to 15 degrees higher than my coolant temp. The highest I recall ever seeing was about 240 on a hot summer afternoon in heavy traffic.
It doesn't seem probable that the oil temp could be that high and your coolant stay at a steady 210, with oil at 300 degrees heat sink would eventually raise the whole temperture of the motor and coolant...WW
thanks guys, i dont really think that the oil is that hot, because it would look or smell burnt i would think... new to this car and just didnt know...
