Security and Code Issues for Delco/Bose Removal?

I need to take my Delco in-dash radio/CD "head unit" out of the car to get the backlighting repaired. I have been advised that one should NOT disconnect the radio/CD unit until they "know the security code" or else there will be BIG TROUBLE.
Is this true? What the hell is the security code? How do I determine the code? What sort of trouble will I have if I just pull out the unit? Any advice on this matter greatly appreciated!

The stereo has a number code you have to punch in if you disconnect the stereo. This may be found in your owners manual(it may be written in somewhere, or there may be a card with it on there).
Also you can go to the dealership to find it if you can't find it elsewhere.
