I have just purchased a 1996 LT4. It is my first corvette and was wondering if anyone would have some advice on general maintenance, problems, mods, and care. Right off the bat I was hopeing to do an oil and coolant change..any suggestions?
Re: Help for a First Time LT4 Corvette Owner (MaddMaxx)
Only use Mobil 1 or other true synthetic oils. Castol Syntec is not synthetic. I would change all fluids including the differential, flush the radiator, and unplug the cags. This is a plug on the transmisson that plugs into the trans on the drivers side under the car by the shifter. It controls the 1-4 shifting and by unplugging it you avoid the 1-4 shift. They also make an aftermarket plug you can get if you want to keep the plug safe. Mine's just dangling. Get new good tires if the car has originals. Night and day from a performance, ride, and driving in the wet standpoint. Go to the tirerack for tire reviews. Michelin Pilots, BF goodrich Gforce KD, or Firestone SZEP are probably the top three. Never, never power wash the motor, use hawk pads as replacements when its time, and the best bang for the buck performance upgrade is changing the rear to a 4.09. Hot cam upgrade is also great for your motor but is alot more with the labor. Put in a real sterio and use the bose for a tire block. Hope this helps
Re: Help for a First Time LT4 Corvette Owner (92TripleBlack)
Good lordy 92tb,
In one post you have gone over everything I learned in the last 12 months. I did everything you said except the hot cam and it came with pilots that had 800 miles on em. I don't have any trouble with my stero tho.....PS hes right 150% about the rear hehe great fun.
Hes spot on.
Except of the 96 you need to fool the computer when you disconnect the cags noid or you will (supposed to anyway) get a code in the puter...
