Default 4+3 leak

on my tranny, the lower bolt connecting the tranny to the od is leaking. its the bolt directly above the od pan. can i just take that bolt out and coat the bolt in rtv and stuff it back in there? or is this a sign of a worse prob.
the tranny and od were rebuilt 4 years ago, and only has about 1k since.
thanks

Commonly reported that the housing area around the bolt can get a crack leading to the leak.

alright, i am not the fastest mover but i did find a crack a couple weeks back
i called the shop that rebuilt the transmission because it has leaked since i got it back from them. I took it back to them sevearl times to stop the leak but they never could find the problem and both sides got frustrated so i just dropped the issue. I had been just refilling the tranny oil when i wanted to drive it, which was very little. Well now that i know its a crack in the casing, i am mad that they rebuilt a tranny with a cracked case. I called the shop to ask about warranty and what i could do about it. He said this sort of thing happens(where they rebuild only to find the case had crack and customer is screwed). Is it that often that trannys are rebuilt only to then find a crack in the casing? On the shop, my dad and I have used this shop for many transmissions and they have a good reputation. The shop wants me to bring the car back to them so they can eopoxy the crack? Are they any other solutions?
thanks

Monte, don't be too quick to think it is this. The Seal between the two may have gone bad and the Tranny is pumping oil into the O/D.....but I guess you would know becuase you were filling the O/D and not the T10 with heavy gear oil.

There is what is called "the front plate" and that is what you see. That plate is about $275 and can be replaced pretty easily by the shop. The whole thing needs to come out and be uncoupled from the T10 4sp. The the O/D can be opened up and that plate be replaced along with the input shaft seals.

Gonna cost ya money though.....not and easy job and just sealing the O.D is about a 6 hour job...benched....

For FREE?
Whatever the cause is, you are not going to fix it from the outside without taking it apart.

I have the same thing wrong with mine. I tried the liquid weld stuff from those J.B. guys along with a bunch of RTV on top of that once it had dried and I dont think it slowed the leak at all. My plan is to just ditch the 4+3 and go with something else that doesnt cost so much to repair and wont break as often.

A well maintained 4+3 does not break often.

i can actually see a crack above that bottom bolt that is just above the od pan
nope, i keep refilling the gear oil
for the longest time, i didnt know the od and tranny where seperate pieces, and just assumed the shop was right, the pan was leaking and refill for it was the tranny with gear oil, but come to find out when i finally investigated why they are 2 seperate units and the od pan was not leaking at all, but the theres a crack that i can see right near that lowest bolt.
thanks
