Hello. I have been doing some heavy thinking on replacing my original exhaust. My question is:
1. I am thinking about installing a set of TPI Long tube headers. I am also going to install their pipes back to the cat. What cat would be suggested to be installed?
2. I have been looking at both Borla and Corsa cat back systems. I want something that is pretty throaty but, I do not want to run without any mufflers at all. What does everyone suggest? Sound is everything. I have not been able to get sound clips of L98's with different exhaust configurations.
As far as a cat, most people probably either get Carsound or Random Tech. As far as catback choices, there are numerous. What kind you get/want is dependent on the sound that you want from the exhaust or the amount of sound that you're willing to tolerate.
If you want absolutely no drone whatsoever, there is only one choice and that's Corsa. They sound great at idle and when you stomp the accelerator, the exhaust comes alive, but with no drone. B&B makes in my opinion the best looking exhaust system and it sounds great, but it has drone. Almost all of them will have some drone except Corsa. Flowmasters sound powerful and if you can live with cabin noise or drone, then they're good.
In my opinion, go with Corsa because if you decide to modify and increase your car's power, drone will only increase and be quite annoying unless there's a Corsa exhaust lying underneath.

2.5" will support in excess of 500 chp, 3" will kill your low-end output unless you're spending a lot of time over 5k RPM.
I didn't go with Corsa, as the cat-back is too expensive for my tastes, but I do know that cruising drone can be significantly reduced with certain setups regardless of the mufflers. Rule of thumb is that the exhaust tips should stick out atleast 2" past your rear bumber, and this will reduce drone since the tone cannot reflect underneath the chassis. Another way to reduce drone is using a single pipe outlet/muffler instead of the dual tips the stock mufflers have. It may look weird only having one pipe out of each side, but this lowers the reflection area for the exhaust tone and eliminates any bottlenecks that dual-pipe tips have.
I'm running a single Flowmaster super 44 muffler, and drone at idle is significant yet tolerable - it sounds like a boombox at the back of the car. The tips only extend 1" off of the bumper, yet the cruising drone is reduced significantly compared to the muffler eliminators I ran beforehand. The elims stuck out atleast 2-3" from the bumper, yet still had more drone at cruising RPMs.
Getting the right exhaust note is an art, just ask any Harley fanatic. No matter what exhaust setup you choose, there is a way to change the tone, just that the Corsa guys took the easier/more expensive route to it.
go to tpis.com and inquire about the sale of there 3.5 inch catback into 3 inch outlets. My friend bought that pipe for 225.00 the he bought a set of flowmaster super44's.

Open for suggestions.....
My '89 has long tubes, a high flow cat I bought from Mid-America [ ? brand] , and Borla's
They make your ears bleed under 2,000 rpm at low speeds. Cabin noise is high and low frequency [ sort of boom box-ish].
At high rpm's it is down right erotic.
If you have a 2.59 rear gear it will drone you to death around town.
In fact I now have the perfect excuse to got to 3.75 gears!!!

If the OP plans on any type of FI/nitrous in the future, I would recommend a minimum of 2.75", but a N/A 383 will make plenty of power on 2.5"
Opinion has nothing to do with it. You stated an old wive's tale with no basis in physics. This claim has been discussed, and corrected, numerous times on this site. I'm perplexed why it keeps resurfacing.
I dont have headers but I love the sound of my Flowmasters, drone is not an issue with mine, tips stick out 2 inches
My flow masters have such a great throaty rumble! All of my neighbors compliment me on the sound. They love hearing me rumble into my driveway. no noticeable drone on highways either. Made a noticeable increase in acceleration too! tips do project 1 1/2"-2"

I run the complete TPIS system from the LT headers on back to their cat back; why not get the whole system.....it's a black pipe set up but I don't have any "drone" that I hear others discuss often here....The tips on the Flowmasters that it comes with stick past the bumpers probably around 2" or so.....sounds great.

I couldn't find a TPIS exhaust system on Flowmaster's website. Are your mufflers Flowmaster the same or is it just the pipes?
I run TPIS long tubes thru 3" mandrel bent tubing to a pair of Flowmasters. There is no problem at all with low end on this 409, making 550+(squared), with or without a stock single CAT (84).
Drone? WTF is that? Do I hear the exhaust? Hell yes. Do I like it? Hell yes. It ain't no F'in Pruis! I admit it's louder than I prefer, especially when 'on it', but cruising is okay. The CAT reduces some of the volume, of course. Some neighbors like it; one doesn't.
Two other factors factor into resonance: 1) tip exit distance behind the fascia, and 2) the overlap on the valve timing.
