I have a 94 coupe.. stock.. auto.. do not know what the gears are. how hard are they to change...want to come out of the hole a little quicker...drive on street full time...do not want to distroy gas milage too bad...? Getting my programer (hypertec) tomorrow and going to flowmaster 40 mufflers also tomorrow... just looking for the next mod. thanks terry tbmoore@cableone.net
I think you'll either have 3.07's like me, or 2.59's. If you have the 2.59's they HAVE to go .. the 3.07's are alright, especially if you do highway driving.
Check for G92 in your RPO list to know if you have the performance axle as well.
You have maybe 4 choices:
1. Change the current gears with newer gears up to a point without a carrier change. There is a kit for 3.73's that fit the 2.59 carrier available.
2. Change the whole pumpkin with a gear ratio of your chosing as available stock throughout the years.
3. Do the Dana44 conversion to the 6 spd gears. I did this for the 3.45 and stronger rear end.
4. There's surely another choice available here, but it escapes me right now. Gotta get a soda to wakeup.
Changing the actual gears themselves requires some experience and knowledge. The gears must mesh "just right" or they won't last 1,000 miles. This requires shimming and checking run-out repeatedly. Almost everyone sends out their rear pumpkin for the pro's to complete the swap. This usually runs around $800-$1,000.
