Default 89 valve covers stained ?

89 valve covers had a "brown' stain on them. Read where you could clean them with wheel cleaner and a scotch pad. Didn't work, more discoloration now. Are these painted from the factory or can they be cleaned? Looks like fun just taking them off. Thanks

This is a common problem, its not a stain at all, but an oxidation. The only way to fix it is to pull the covers, clean(grind) all the junk off and then paint.

I'm assuming they look like this?

Here is how mine look now:

What paint did you use to paint them? I haven't been able to find any.

I bought mine through Ecklers. All the major distributors carry it. Don't forget a new set of gaskets and possibly a new emblem.
