My rearend (1993 6spd coupe) feels like it is going to come out all the time. It doesnt slide. Just feels like at any second it is going to wave goodbye to traction and say hello to a tree. This is under medium force in turns. In my 1992 auto i could drive it much harder and the rear end felt much safer. The tires on the old car were 11yr old gsc. The tires on the current car are Firehawk sz50's. They have good tread and i dont think they are very old. Any ideas. If i take it to an alignment shop will i get an honest answer as to the condition of the alignment? I dont need to spend $100 if it is good to begin with. Thanks
Well mine were a feeling, the back end getting quite squirelly. If you jack up the car put your hands at 12 and 6 o'clock and try to move the tire back and forth like this. The wheel should be nice and tight. Mine had a good 1/2" of play in it.
Mine did the same thing, turned out to be a combination of things:
Worts thing: Bad outer tie-rod end on drivers side, replaced both
Bad thing: slightly worn right side wheel bearing
Needs replaced: Rubber bushings
Check the tie-rod end closely, that is what caused most of my problems, about $40 from Autozone, but you will probably have to have it aligned
I am willing to bet that it is your rear toe link. Most of us have gone through this with our older C4's. Not hard to troubleshoot, relatively cheap to replace, and not hard to R&R.

You'll also want to check the play in the stub-axles. Hold the wheel at 3 & 9 and see if it wiggles as well. I had all kinds of play in mine, had just replaced the wheel bearings and U-joints and found that I actually have play in the stub-axles.
It is caused by the clutch-packs being worn. Since they are thinner, they allow the play between the cross-shaft and the clutch-pack. GM sells a snap-ring shim kit that you can use to tighten it back up.
You referred to a "toe link". In looking through my manual, I don't see anyathing called that specifically. Is it known by another name, or can you tell me the exact location? My car does quite a bit of rear wheel steering when I accelerate or let off the gas.
