I finally, after a day of cursing, was able to pull my old, broken damper off the car, an 86 coupe. Funny the one off my parts car was a lot nicer and came of easier. Now for the fun part, putting it all back together. What is the best way to install the balancer? I don't have access to a harware store like in the states that would have the right bolt to get a longer one like the crank bolt and screw it onto the crank. There isn't enough clearance to get any kind of leverage to beat on the center with a hammer. I can't think of any other way. Thanks for the help.
Chris,
You certainly have MY symapthies. I was one of the first to read this post this morning, and I didn't respond, becaue I didn't have an answer for you. I'm afraid I still don't. I see where 16 others have read this and STILL no response. They must feel as helpless as I do, and YOU especially. You don't have a hardware store, but do you have a motor pool? I made my intallation tool from a spring, center bolt. How about some dry ice? Could you freeze the end of the crank and heat the hub of the damper? I'm not sure that will work, but I'm clutching at straws, like you are. Short of pulling the engine, I don't know what else to suggest. I doubt I've done you any good, but I couldn't see you being totally ignored. I feel for you. COME ON, GUYS! Help poor ol Chris out!
Thank your for the sympathy.
I think I'm going to Pull the radiator and radiator shroud. That should give me enough room to work with something to prob up against it and hammer the h*ll out of it. Oh well, I needed to flush the system anyway.
I just went through this with my 89 and the mods that I did. I don't know if there are any differences between the 89 and your year, but if you give me the bolt size and length, I will send you a bolt. I would NOT recommend hitting it with a hammer! You will probably due to the close courters, pound it on crooked and ruin or score the crank shaft or at the very least ruin the damper! Get me the dimensions of what you need and I will send it OK? You will probably have to take out the radiator and shroud to be able to get room to put a ratchet on the bolt to tighten it. I did mine with a ratchet and about a 8" extention. There is a loop in the power steering line that will allow for an extention to go through. If you need anything let me know. I will try to watch the post! Good Luck!
Well, I finally got it. I ended up pulling the radiator (lots of fun) and hammered on a large, 36mm socked. I got it all back together and it now runs great. The ticking noise that I've been listening to since I got the car a month and a half ago is now gone. Too bad it was raining, but the car seems to be doing well now. This definately goes on the list of things I never want to do again, at least with the motor in the car. I ended up finding a bolt in the right size after going to a couple different hardware stores out here. Thank you for the offer though, it is much appreciated.
Now all I have to do is find the time to rip out my 2.59 rear end and install the 3.07 rear I got out of my parts car.
Thank you.
