When im driving lately ive been getting this misty coolant smelling air coming into my car from the space inbetween the dash pad and the crash pad. I cant figure out what it is or where its coming from......I checked my coolant level a few days ago, and it was a little low, so i filled the rest with water, and since then it has been fine. Havent noticed my car getting hot or anything, but then again it is 40 degrees outside.

You will also notice that the windshield fogs up when it shouldn't and there is residue from the fog. I hope it's note your core, it's a major PITA to get to. The bright side is it's very cheap if you do it yourself but I would recommend Mr. Goodwrench for that one.

whats involved in doing it myself........and how much would it cost to get it replaced?
As stated above it's a MAJOR PITA. I did the one in my '84 last Sept. Get a hold of the service manual. There are little screws in there that even a double jointed monkey will have trouble getting at. Guess what that makes me? I consider myself a moderately able mechanic. Good enough to complete most projects, but WAY too slow to be a pro. It took me the better part of 3 days. It may only take YOU 3 hours. I'd LOVE to know what the flat rate is for this job. Almost anyone can do it. It's not technical, and doesn't require any special tools, just time, patience, and maybe, rubber arms. Get yourself a quote. Then, you can decide if your masocist enough to under take the project.
Also, is there any way to make it stop fogging my windshield until i can get if fixed?
Stop by the auto parts store and pick up a little adaptor they make just for this situation. It is a plastic tube that accepts a 5/8ths hose on one end and a 3/4 on the other. Remove the hoses from the heater core (at the firewall from under the hood) and connect them to each other using this adaptor. No more leaks inside the car. No more heater, either, until the core is replaced.

just got off the phone with my shop and its gonna be $600 to replace the heater core......as i cant make close to that in 3 days, i guess ill be doin it myself......also found coolant all over my pass side carpet and floormat.....will be goin to the autoparts asap to get that hose to stop the car from leaking everywhere......So no more heater for a while...hehe glad i live in Texas.........appreciate everybodys help and insight.....especially CFI-EFI.
Oh and if someone could copy the pages out of the service manual i would GREATLY apprecitate it.
By the way....what exactly does the heater core look like so i know what to plug up.....?

$600.00 doesn't suprise me. That equates to about a 10 hour job. I knew it was an involved project. I don't feel like such a whiner, now.
I could scan the paragraph from my '84 manual, but I don't know how well that translates on an '89. Probably not too far off.
You can't see the heater core. Under the hood, go to the right side of the engine. Locate the two heater hoses where they go in to the firewall. They are connected at the firewall with a hose clamp. Loosen the clamps and pull the hoses off of the nipples they connect to. You may have to slice the hose from the firewall out for an inch or so, to get them to release from the nipples. Then just square off the ends of the hoses and slide on to the adaptor and clamp. All your doing is short circuiting the heater out of the system. The brass nipples the hoses were on, sticking out of the firewall ARE the heater core. Except for the nipples, the heater core is inside, under the dash. By the way, that plastic adaptor shouldn't cost over $5.00 or so.
