What data reader will work with my 1985 Corvette? What data can be retrieved? Can timing be set using a data reader? I would be willing to use a lap top if I new what program to buy and where to get a cable to attach it to the pickup in the driver footwell.
1.) Any OBD1 compatible scanner/reader.
2.) No, OBD1 systems do NOT show or set the timing thru the ALDL connector - it's a Mechanically adjusted distributor..
3.) www.moates.net
If you are asking about setting the Initial Timing then that is mechanically set.
Correct, with a Wrench. Turning the distributor and using a timing light, hopefully. Old school.
If you are asking about the timing advance then that can be read via the ALDL connector using TTS Datamaster or Tunerpro .
No, it cannot. You can see the timing Table(s) in the PROM chip, but not by using the ALDL connector. It requires use of BIN file editing software and a PROM reader (or "ostrich" type connector to the PROM connector in the ECM itself). This does NOT, either, tell you directly what the ECM is commanding for ignition advance.
If you want to change the timing advance values you can do this with Tunerpro and a chip reader/burner.
True, sort of. You can edit the timing Tables, which in turn will effect what the ECM commands for advance. You cannot set or adjust the advance directly. Again, this cannot be done thru the ALDL connector.
I have a '86 but I beleive the '85 is the same.
Nope. Different ECM's, different PROM chips, etc. The '85 is a stand-alone (also could be called Mongrel) year - no other GM ECM uses a "bare" PROM chip, or communicates as slowly thru the ALDL (not that the ECM Thinks slowly, just that it talks to the ALDL slowly).
Do not get a AutoX-ray. I doesn't tell you that it will not read the 870 chip in the 1985. I had to call their tech service line and bounced from rep to rep....final answer was that their unit will not support the 1985 Corvette with the 870 chip.
I think you will either have to get a TECH1 $$$$$ or I believe that WINDAL willl work with a lap top.
I'm installing a host new items this week in my 85, injectors, filters, IAC, O2 sensor, EGR, etc. and I'd like to plug my laptop in after its all done to get some readings. Is this possible with the 85? If so, what do I need to do and buy?
