Default steering column is very loose up top

I have an 84 and the column is very loose up and down as well as left to right. How much has to be taken apart to fix this and is there a common part to fix this problem? I also need to change out the ignition key lock since I cannot get the key to turn backwards to accessory. Does anyone have any words of wisdom?

There are bolts where the column meets the dash. These bolts hold the column in place. If those bolts are loose, you will have play in all 4 directions. Look under the dash. Easy fix.

My 89 wont turn back to acc.

Good Luck

It could also be the tilt housing. People use the steering wheel to pull themselves out of the car and cause the housing to wear out where the pivot pins are held. The only way to find out is to take the steering wheel off and inspect. Here is a helpful link. http://domesticmisfits.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=124

I just did my 84 vette,
Not hard to do at all ( Just take your time)

You can go to pepboys & rent the steering wheel puller / lockplate compresser tool, Cost me $58.00 But you get it back when you return the tool ( within 10 Days)...

Damn, Wish i took pictures for ya.. Did'nt even think about that... Sorry Man.. Trust me it is not hard, Once you get in there you'll see...
