I just left a club...popped in it "D", 60 feet out...coming to a light, it downshifted EXTREMELY hard in to first....Hit the gas, nothing happens..OK. Try again...moving right along. Here we go. I stopped, popped the hood and listened for the tell tale 700R4 whine. NOTHING. Gave it a usual run on the way home, all seems ok. Pulled up a few hills to test for slippage...nothing. Fluid is not blood red and smells a little funny. I am not complaining. To get over 20K from a 700R with this much torque is not bad. I just hope I can get it before something totally self destructs. And believe me, this thing has been pounded as of late.
I'm going to call my tranny guy tomorrow and see what He thinks. I'd rather get it before it strands me like the other two.
Hey JD,
Tranny woes? Hope not...btw was your car cold when this happened? maybe it needed to warm up a little more...just an idea...let it sit overnight and try the scenario tomorrow.
If its the same see what your tranny guys says.Hope its just cold fluid or something.
TTYL!!
:)
Just to give you an update, my tranny guy said that is NOT a good sign...and to discontinue driving it 'til they take the pan down and see if any metal is in there. He said over 20,000 miles behind this engine is good usage(I told Him how hard it's been driven as of late as well) and it was bound to happen. To loosen that convertor or not to loosen hehe. It's 2800 now...maybe a 3000 will help 60'. I know that'll get some opinions floating which is what I'd like.
Sorry to hear about it. But this is the reason why i switch back to 6 speed. Clutch problems are easier to deal with.
I respect your feelings...but with 490 foot pounds if I EVER tried to launch HARD on a slick, or E.T. Street, the D44 would grenade. I have enough trouble now keeping things in one piece...that would add one more weak link to the equation. If I didn't race AT ALL a six speed would be fun.
My Dana 44 held up just fine with the same TQ and a stick. I raced it often on sticky tires. We had identical motor setups except I had the AFR 190's. The Dana 44 is pretty tough. I know a few blown 383 combos with stick that race alot and haven't had any problems besides U joints and one had a yoke break.
But as for your tranny problems thats not a good sign at all. Sounds like what my 700 started doing when I had my 88 with the spray. A rebuild was in the near future after the first episode. :smash:
Some people prefer auto's & some like maunal transmissions... depends on the person & how they use their car. But to switch to a manual because of a lot of torque just isn't the answer ;)
JD... hope all goes well for ya !!! tranny problems suck as we all know... Let me know if theres anything i can do for ya bud !!!
LP...... I agree to some extent the durability of a Dana 44. I've heard of many spitting on the line behind six speeds on sticky tracks(95vettski, ya hear me? :D) and I am sure some hold up better than others. It's hit or miss. I fully agree mashing the gas and feeling the rush is cool..but a six speed is tons more fun down the 1/4. There's the breakage factor of course..doule edged sword.
Joe... thanks for the offer to assist. With all due respect.. I am giving my tranny guy a second chance, it was the only one to hold up this long. Rossler does all of LPEs. They didn't work for me..and again I'd heard numerous 700R's by them on their 300th pass, GO FIGURE!
Again, I am glad this happened now. It won't take long to get it up on it's feet again, and with this behind me,I'll have more condifence to run at the track.
Darn JD !!! Bad news... sorry to hear about it, but a new tranny can really give you a new kick in the butt sometimes.
With your application, I would think it would last for 40-50K miles !!! I have about 20 k on my 90 tranny now and have zero problems, feels the same as when I had it put in.
As a note, I don't think you really need to get fancy with a 88 and later 700R4 core (Or is it 87 and later ??) I had mine rebuilt 100% to stock GM standards... at my power level it still holds up. Knock on wood I guess.
I'm trying to think if I know of a six speed stroker that has not busted parts in the rear on a regular basis. You also need to budget yearly for a new clutch if you drag race every week. Sorry to hear about the problem JD.

Don't remind me
Hope it all works out with your tranny. Might want to upgrade your converter if your looking for some better 60' times, but then again you don't take your car to the track :p: :p: :p:

HEY.....Knock it off :mad I'm the ONLY one who can "bust em" on JD..
JD Vettski is right, you dont race it enough, Your getting fair warning.. I better see that car more than twice this yr at E Town !!! :)
